A funeral mass will be held for Velma Currie, 99, at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father James McLelland. Interment will follow in Alexandria National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at Rose-Neath’s Southside Chapel from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a vigil following the visitation.
Velma was born on January 22, 1910 in Ray County, MO to Cleason and Nannie Thompson. She passed away into the arms of her Savior, April 12, 2009 in Shreveport, where she was a resident, and member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, serving as Lector, Eucharistic Minister and Catechist. She was honored to receive the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice and the Diocesan Medal of Honor awards. Velma graduated from Moberly, Missouri High and Junior College then graduating from University of Kansas with a major in Elementary Education. After retiring from the Caddo Parish Tax Assessor’s Office after 18 years, she tutored in public and parochial schools, a mentor of Southern Hills Elementary School, and then taught swimming at Holy Angels. She was in the first group of Jefferson Award winners, named RSVP National Volunteer Finalist, also receiving the Louis Selber Award for Teacher Volunteer.
Preceding Velma in death where her husbands, Donald Scott Brown, Neal Joseph Pierson and Roy Earl Currie, her parents, sister, Muriel Slaughter Herrmann, and brother, Charles Donovan Thompson. Left to cherish her memory is her god-child, Brenda DeYoung Prichard and husband, Benjamin, and her sons, Tony and Travis DeYoung; nephew, Charles Spencer Thompson and wife, Karen, daughter, Francesca; sons, Alex, Geoffrey and Stephen; her niece, Harriette Thompson Wollard Sever and husband, Tom, their sons, Andrew and Patrick and Great nephew, Kenneth E. Slaughter, Jr.
The family wishes to thank Pat Mayfield her devoted sitter and special friend Concetta Jacks and all the loving and considerate friends who helped Velma in many ways during her long life.
