Robert Mabry Denton, 98, passed away on November 7, 2008. He was born on January 28, 1910 in Valiant, Oklahoma to the late Robert Montgomery Denton and the late Ada Marie Anderson. The family later moved to Louisiana and Robert spent most of his youth and adult life in northern Louisiana and the Shreveport area. He graduated from Cotton Valley High School in May 1928 as Salutatorian of the class. After attending business training he worked for Reynolds Tobacco Company until the depression at which time he moved back with his parents.
In 1935 he joined the Army at Barksdale and became a Flight Surgeons Assistance. After his three years were up he joined the Regular Army Reserve. He then worked with the U.S. Engineering in Burwood, LA until 1941 when he received orders to report to Camp Beauregard, LA where he was promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant. New orders were later received and he reported to Camp Stoneman in California where he boarded a ship for what would be an around the world trip. He served most of his overseas duty in Iran where he achieved the rank of Warrant Officer. Robert was discharged from the service October 14, 1945.
On October 21, 1945 he married Nellie Laseter in Shreveport. After marriage he held the position of Commercial Transportation Officer at Barksdale and later joined the IRS from which he retired in 1973. Robert and Nellie were members of Caddo Heights United Methodist Church where Robert was a Steward, Church Treasurer, and a faithful leader of that congregation as well as in the Louisiana Methodist Conference. In 1988, Nellie Denton died, and Robert moved into Summerfield Estates, as one of its first residents. He then became a member of Christ United Methodist Church. After seventeen years, he moved to Heritage Stratemore Manor where he lived until his death.
He is survived by nieces Billie Jean Boyd and husband Jim; Joy Derrick and husband Johnnie, Dott Tyra, and Barbre Stokes and husband Charles. His nephews are Bobby J. Denton and wife Polly, Perry Brasell and wife Carolyn; thirteen great nieces and nephews, and one great-great nephew. Robert was the youngest of four children and is predeceased by siblings Allen Denton, Thelma Denton Fields, and Ruby Denton Brasell; one nephew, David Brasell. A dear and loving friend, Mary Wellborn, also survives Mr. Denton.
Visitation will be Monday night from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Southside. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at Rose-Neath Southside and will be conducted by Reverend Tom Howe of Christ Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent Ave., with full Military Honors. Pallbearers will be Carl Derrick, Don Corliss, Ed Powell, Rob Shadoin, Ronnie Shadoin, Joel Stark and A.W. McDonald. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Denton has requested that memorials be made to Christ United Methodist Church.
