Gladys J. Brockhaus, 85, was born November 20, 1923 to Edward Frederick Brockhaus and Bonnie Fogleman Brockhaus. She died peacefully Sunday, April 19, 2009 with her niece and nephew at her side.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Centuries Memorial Park Cemetery. Officiating will be Chaplain Larry Lafitte. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at Rose-Neath Southside Funeral Home.
She graduated from Byrd High School in 1941. She entered Nursing School and graduated in New Orleans, LA in Sept. 1945. She began her career at North LA. Sanitarium (Doctors Hospital) in 1945 until 1966 when she transferred to the newly built Bossier General Hospital where she worked until retirement in 1983. Upon retirement she worked for one of her favorite doctors, Dr. William Bailey in private practice for about 3 years.
During her 41-year nursing career, she maintained perfect attendance. Doctors that she worked under had great respect for her and have said that she was one of the elite in her profession. Other nurses said that that learned more from her “on the floor” than any class they could have taken. She stood firm in the profession all the way from her daily starched white cap to white hose and white polished shoes. She exhibited the highest qualities of the nursing profession.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Berta Elizabeth Heath and husband, Bob, sister-in-law, Lillian Brockhaus, brother-in-law, Garland Branch, Sr. and a nephew, Mark Allen Branch. She is survived by her brother, Ed Brockhaus and a sister, Bonnie B. Branch. Even though she never married, she loved Garland Jr., Debra, Mary Lillian, Martha, Mark and Theresa as if they were her own. She also leaves behind a host of great nieces/nephews, and great-great nieces/nephews to remember her.
Special thanks goes to Juanita Myles and staff at the Terrace of Bossier for their love and care of “Miss Tootsie”. We would like to extend many, many blessings to the Circle of Life Hospice for their devoted care.
