SHREVEPORT, LA - Funeral services for C.D. Barnes, 73, of Shreveport will be held Thursday, August 21, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Shreveport at the head of Texas Street. Officiating will be Rev. Terry Love, Rev. Sandi Huber and Don McDowell. Visitation will be at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
C.D. passed away on Monday, August 18, 2008, after a lengthy illness. He was born on June 15, 1935 in Fulton, Mississippi. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University and a longtime resident and businessman in Shreveport.
He and his former partner, Leo Miles, acquired Williams Pressure Service in 1977, and renamed the company Milbar Hydro-Test, Inc. Milbar did pipeline work all over the United States, as well as Canada and Mexico and performed the testing of the Trans Alaskan Pipeline. C.D. retired in 1998. He was a former board member and lifetime honorary member of the Pipeline Contractors Association, the Canadian Pipeline Contractors Association, Southern Gas Association, Midwest Gas Association and was the recipient of the 1996 Top Ten Small Business Person of the Year Award by the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce.
C.D.'s selfless work in the field of recovery over the last 21 years has touched countless lives. He was widely known for his love of people and his generous spirit. His quiet service was recognized in 1994, when he received the Times' Unsung Hero Award presented by the Shreveport Times in conjunction with the National Conference of Christians and Jews; his 2004 receipt of the Sister Margaret McCaffery Award presented by the Christian Services Program, and his 2006 receipt of the Wayne Drewry Award presented by the Council on Alcoholism of Northwest Louisiana for lifetime work in helping people recover from alcohol and drug addiction.
He loved his church, St. Luke's United Methodist and served it in many capacities. In C.D.'s life, he reinvented himself, from a Mississippi cotton picker to Army Veteran, to Pipeliner, world traveler, business owner, church pillar, school-of-life teacher and Good Samaritan.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Cliff and Lelian Barnes, brother, Dalton Barnes, sisters, Lois Young and Joyce Wilson.
C.D. is survived by his wife, Dana; son, Cliff and wife, JoAnn of Shreveport and their children, Megan Temple and husband, Ryan and son, Dalton, and Morgan McComic; his daughter, Tracy and husband, Walter Lay of Louisville, KY; and his "good as daughters", Stephanie Westmoreland and husband, Geoff of Shreveport, LA and their children, Geoffery and Anna; and Jenny Bach Smith of Columbus, OH. He is also survived by his sisters, Delma Robinson, Sally Kreuter and husband, Lyle and Faye Senter and husband, Grady and many nieces and nephews.
Honoring C.D. as pallbearers will be Bryan Wilson, Dan Barnes, Dr. Eddie D. Johnson, Dan Lohman, Billy Wilburn, Jerry Acree, Gil Phillips and Glenn Langley. Honorary pallbearers will be R.H. "Skippy" Shirley, John Allen, C. David "Bubba" Powell and Milton Williams.
The family requests that memorials be directed to St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 6012 Youree Drive, Shreveport, LA 71105, the Oakwood Home for Women, 1700 Highland Avenue, Shreveport, LA 71101 or just do a good deed for a stranger.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the caregivers at Willis-Knighton-Pierremont and Life-Care Hospital.
